Dostoevsky on the Monk Life

It is true, perhaps, that this instrument which had stood the test of a thousand years for the moral regeneration of a man from slavery to freedom and to moral perfectibility may be a two-edged weapon and it may lead some not to humility and complete self-control but to the most Satanic pride, that is, to bondage and not to freedom.

-- Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

  1. Hmmm.... Whenever I read stuff like that, where even ordained trying to find answers in explicit non-buddhadhamma, I ask myself: Is this another sign of the decline of Buddhadhamma? Hmmm....

  2. Wisdom, wherever it may be found, is still wisdom... It is a decline in the Buddhadhamma when people criticize what is dhamma as not dhamma and see what is not dhamma as dhamma.
