A Buddhist Nun

"I hereby go forth..." With these words, Mae Chii Thanavari is born; Chom Tong's latest addition to the monastic community, and a foreigner to boot.

People might think that the most important difference between ordinary people and those who have gone forth is the many rules they need to keep. Mae Chii Thanavari was no exception. But once the hair (and eyebrows) were gone and the robe donned, she changed her mind.

The most important thing about going forth, of course, is the going forth itself; going forth from the entanglement of the worldly life, both within and without. Not an easy thing to do, not at all.
