Letter to Chanda and Friends

Dear Friends and Students,

Warmest greetings and congratulations on your efforts to undertake practice of Vipassana meditation. I am writing to encourage you in your efforts, and assure you of the goodness of the path that you are on. Indeed, Vipassana meditation is the path that leads beings to reach freedom from suffering. The Lord Buddha saw that beings suffer because of four things:

1) attachment to sensual desire
2) attachment to happiness
3) attachment to permanence
4) attachment to self

In order to be freed from suffering, the Lord Buddha saw that beings had to be free from these four attachments, so He taught the four foundations of mindfulness to help beings to overcome each of the four attachments. (Read more...)
